Why do we mount devices in Linux?

Device files are stored under /dev directory which operating system functions would not know how to access them. The mount command mounts a storage device or filesystem, making it accessible and attaching it to an existing directory structure. Its counterpart umount instructs the operating system that the file system should be disassociated from its mount point, making it no longer accessible and may be removed from the computer.
